Let’s face it, parenting in the digital world is not easy – neither are teens for that matter! Not to mention, tech is extremely fast-changing and moving at a pace that’s hard for most people (even tech professionals) to keep up with. And, with change comes a need to constantly adapt and continuously reevaluate… everything!
In short, it all started when our family was time-warped (almost overnight) into parenting three teens while still learning how to adjust to life with three young children of our own. Although I was a career professional in technology consulting and cybersecurity at the time, I was baffled by the complexity, challenges and pitfalls of establishing a good digital parenting and online safety strategy.
I thought to myself:
If this is difficult for me with years of deep technology & cybersecurity education and experience then how challenging is this for non-tech parents?
This journey led to tons of research, writing and a desire to share anything I can with my community of friends who are embarking on similar treks. My hope was (and still is) to empower families through their journey towards a safer, more secure, digitally CONNECTED experience.

Is there an app for that?
Absolutely! Common Sense Media has been an amazing resource for many families, allowing both parents and their respective children to review apps, movies, tv shows, books, etc. before requesting, buying or downloading. This site is packed with recommended age-appropriate media of all types and comes with an excellent search and write up for a ton of related media with easy-to-read summaries e.g. “what parents need to know”.
What are some of the official media ratings?
If you’re trying to stick to the industry-standards in terms of age ra
tings and appropriateness, then here are a few areas you can start.
