Proverbs 18:21 tells us that “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.

You know those moments where you open your mouth and words just roll off the tongue so naturally in the moment…. Yet, immediately, that little voice says “maybe you should’ve just kept your mouth shut until you thought about that one….”?

As we walk through each day, are we taking inventory in ourselves (emotionally, mentally and spiritually) and asking whether the words we speak bring life or death? Am I aware of my choice of both words and tone and how they might be perceived by others?

At work, did I use words of encouragement and motivation employees, co-workers and customers or did I just bring criticism and/or judgement to the table to push forward an agenda?

At home, did my words reflect my ability to serve, inspire and build up my family or have I repeatedly hurt or pushed away those who are closest to me?

One of the things I love about my wife is that she’s quick to let me know when the words that come out of my mouth (good intent or not) are hurtful… Now, we usually know when we’re throwing daggers rather than showing dignity, but how often do we stop while it’s still a thought in our head? Better yet, when hurtful words do roll off the tongue, do we course-correct and acknowledge or hold our ground because of pride?

As we walk through our days, may we be more aware, listening and reflecting, asking God to reveal whether our words might give life or discouragement before they come out.

And… when we fail, may His spirit illuminate us and give us the grace, strength and humility (daily) to change course for the sake of His love, His glory and His kingdom.  Amen!
